भारत में उगाए जाने वाले मोटे अनाज में बाजरा सबसे ज्यादा उगाया जाता है। बाजरा सबसे अधिक अफ्रीका और भारत में उगाया जाता है। उत्तर प्रदेश सरकार ने फैसला लिया है कि सरकार मक्का के साथ पहली बार एमएसपी पर बाजरा भी खरीदेगी। मक्का और बाजरा की खरीद 15 अक्टूबर से 16 दिसंबर तक होगी। बाजरा का समर्थन मूल्य ₹2350 प्रति क्विंटल निर्धारित किया गया है। यूपी में 18 जिलों मथुरा ,बदायूं, इटावा, जालौर, प्रयागराज, गाजीपुर, कासगंज, हाथरस, आगरा, मैनपुरी, औरैया आदि में बाजरा की खरीद होगी। भारत सरकार के प्रस्ताव पर संयुक्त राष्ट्र संघ ने 2023 को अंतरराष्ट्रीय बाजरा वर्ष घोषित करने का फैसला लिया है। भारत के इस प्रस्ताव को 72 देशों ने समर्थन दिया है। मार्च 2021 में संयुक्त राष्ट्र महासभा ने 2023 को अंतरराष्ट्रीय बाजरा वर्ष यानी IYOM 2923 घोषित किया है। भारत में तकरीबन 85 लाख हेक्टेयर के  क्षेत्रफल मैं बाजरे की खेती की जाती है।
