वनस्पति मे पिप्पली कुल के पेपर निगरुम नामक बेल है जिस पर बारहमास फल लगते है। इसके अधपके व सूखे फलों को काली मिर्च कहते है। पके व सूखे फलों को अलग कर के सफेद मिर्च बनाई जाती है। और यह मसलो मे उपयोग की जाती है 

काली मिर्च का सर्वाधिक उपयोग मसालो मे किया जाता है। केरल जो की मसालो का राज्य या मसालो का घर है वहाँ इसे मसालो की रानी कहा जाता है। 

काली मिर्च अन्तर्राष्ट्रिय व्यापार का महत्वपूर्ण पदार्थ है विश्व मे काली मिर्च का सबसे बड़ा उत्पादक देश वियतानाम है। जो की कुल दुनिया का 34% उत्पादन करता है। काली मिर्च उत्पादन मे इंडोनेशिया दूसरे व भारत तीसरे स्थान पर है।
