जीरा एक खाद्य पदार्थ है। जिसका इस्तेमाल खाने मे करते है। यह दिखने मे छोटा होता है। और यह सोफ के जैसा दिखाई देता है। जीरे का पोधा 30-50cm ऊचाई तक बढ़ता है। यह पोधा वार्षिक फसल वाला पोधा है। और इसके फलों को हाथ से ही तोड़ा जाता है। इसके तने मे कई शाखाए होती है। और शाखा की लगभग 2-3 उपशाखा होती है। सभी शाखाए बराबर लंबाई की होती है। जिससे यह छतरी नुमा आकार ले लेती है। इसका तना गहरे हरे रंग का होती है। इस पर 4-5cm लम्बी व पतली पत्ती होती है। 

भारत मे जीरा उत्पादन

भारत का 80% जीरे का उत्पादन गुजरात व राजस्थान राज्य करते है। राजस्थान राज्य देश के कुल उत्पादन का 28% जीरा उत्पादन करता है। राजस्थान राज्य के पश्चिमी जिलों मे अधिक जीरा उत्पादन किया जाता है। लेकिन राज्य मे इसकी उपज 380 किलो ग्राम प्रति हेक्टयर कम है। पड़ोसी राज्य गुजरात मे इसकी उपज प्रति हेक्टयर 550 किलो ग्राम है। इसलिए गुजरात राज्य देश का सर्वाधिक जीरा (55.95%) उत्पादन करता है।
