धान एक प्रमुख फसल है जिससे चावल निकाला जाता है ।यह भारत सहित एशिया एवं विश्व के बहुत से देशों का मुख्य भोजन है। भारत में लगभग आधी आबादी इसे मुख्य भोजन के रूप में प्रयोग करती है ।धान की सबसे ज्यादा पैदावार पंजाब में होती है। उत्तर प्रदेश में धान की खेती काफी अच्छी होती है ।उत्तर प्रदेश में मुख्य रूप से उन्नाव, रायबरेली ,चित्रकूट ,अलीगढ़ ,देवीपाटन ,कानपुर ,मेरठ ,बस्ती ,वाराणसी ,आजमगढ़ में इसकी खेती काफी अधिक होती है।। भारत में 6 राज्य पश्चिम बंगाल, आंध्र प्रदेश, असम ,उड़ीसा ,तमिलनाडु और केरल कुल उत्पादित धान का 80 परसेंट अकेले प्रयोग करते हैं। धान का सबसे अधिक उत्पादन पश्चिम बंगाल में होता है।।
