मक्का एक प्रमुख खाद्य फसल है।यह मोटे अनाज में गिनी जाती है। इसे सभी प्रकार की मिट्टी में उगाया जा सकता है। बलुई और दोमट मिट्टी इसके लिए अच्छी मानी जाती है। भारत में कई प्रकार की मक्का का उत्पादन होता है। लगभग 65 फीसदी मक्का का उपयोग मुर्गी व पशु आहार के रूप में किया जाताहै। इसकी बुवाई साल में तीन बार होती है, खरीब के रूप में जून-जुलाई के महीने में रवि के रूप में अक्टूबर-नवंबर महीने में और जायद के रूप में फरवरी-मार्च के महीने में होती है। इससे कई भोज्य पदार्थ तैयार किए जाते हैं जैसे स्टार्च, कॉर्न फ्लैक्स, ग्लूकोस आदि। मक्का को कई अन्य नामों से जाना जाता जैसे मकई, भुट्टा आदि। मक्का का उपयोग तेल, साबुन, मक्के की रोटी, कॉर्न केक आदि बनाने में किया जाता है।
भारत मे मक्के की खेती - भारत मे मक्के की खेती आंध्र प्रदेश, बिहार, कर्नाटक, राजस्थान, उत्तर प्रदेश आदि राज्यों में की जाती है। राजस्थान में मक्का का सर्वाधिक क्षेत्रफल पर खेती होती है और इसका सबसे अधिक उत्पादन कर्नाटक में होता है।
