प्याज भारत के महाराष्ट्र में सबसे ज्यादा उगाई जाती है। महाराष्ट्र में प्याज की बुवाई 5.08 लाख हेक्टेयर क्षेत्रफल में की जाती है। महाराष्ट्र में साल भर में दो बार प्याज की खेती की जाती है ।पहली नवंबर में और दूसरी मई में। प्याज भारत से कई देशों में निर्यात होता है जैसे नेपाल, पाकिस्तान, श्री लंका, बांग्लादेश इत्यादि। भारत में कुल 287 हजार हेक्टेयर में उगाए जाने पर 2450 हजार टन प्याज उगती है। महाराष्ट्र, उड़ीसा, कर्नाटक, उत्तर प्रदेश, तमिलनाडु और गुजरात में अधिक मात्रा में प्याज उगाई जाती है। प्याज उत्पादन के मामले में चीन सबसे अव्वल स्थान पर है।इसके बाद दूसरे स्थान पर भारत है। प्याज निर्यात करने में भारत का पहला स्थान है। विश्व भर में प्याज का 25 परसेंट उत्पादन भारत करता है।
