तिल एक पुष्पीय पौधा है। तिल के बीज से खाद्य तेल निकाला जाता है। तिल को विश्व का सबसे पहला तिलहन माना जाता है। इसकी खेती 5000 साल पहले शुरू हुई थी। भारत मे तिल दो प्रकार का होता है -सफेद और काला। हिन्दू धर्म मे तिल का बहुत महत्व है। पूजा में तिल के तेल का प्रयोग किया जाता है और पितरों के तर्पण में तिल का प्रयोग होता है। तिल की खेती साल में तीन बार की जा सकती है।तिल से कई प्रकार की मिठाई, गजक, लड्डू आदि बनाए जाते हैं। तिल में मिलने  वाले तत्व  विटामिन बी, कैल्शियम, लिनोलिक अम्ल और फास्फोरस पाया जाता है, जो स्वास्थ्य के लिए बहुत आवश्यक है। तिल कोलेस्ट्रोल घटाने में भी सहायक है। तिल के तेल को तेलों की रानी कहा जाता है। तिल के लिए शीतोष्ण जलवायु अच्छी रहती है। ज्यादा बरसात या सूखा पड़ने पर इसकी फसल सही नहीं होती है। इसके लिए हल्की दोमट मिट्टी अच्छी मानी जाती है। इसके अलावा इसे बलुई दोमट और काली मिट्टी में भी उगाया जा सकता है।

भारत में तिल की खेती - भारत के विभिन्न राज्यों में तिल की खेती की जाती है जैसे महाराष्ट्र,राजस्थान,पश्चिम बंगाल,आंध्र प्रदेश,गुजरात, तमिलनाडु, उत्तर प्रदेश,मध्य प्रदेश और तेलंगाना। तिल का सबसे अधिक उत्पादन उत्तर प्रदेश और बुंदेलखंड में किया जाता है।
