गेहूं विश्व की प्रमुख खाद्य फसल है जिस की खेती विश्व भर में की जाती है। विश्व भर के भोजन के लिए उगाई जाने वाली फसलों में मक्का के बाद गेहूं सबसे अधिक उगाई जाने वाली फसल है। गेहूं का सबसे बड़ा उत्पादक देश चीन है, चीन के बाद भारत के गेहू का सबसे बड़ा उत्पादक देश है। गेहू की अच्छी पैदावार के लिए मटियार दोमट मिट्टी सबसे अधिक उपयुक्त मानी जाती है। भारत में उत्तर प्रदेश सबसे ज्यादा गेहूं उत्पादन करने वाला राज्य है, जो देश के कुल गेहूं उत्पादन का 34 परसेंट गेहू उत्पादित करता है और उत्तर प्रदेश में 96 लाख हेक्टेयर भूमि में गेहूं की फसल उगाई जाती है।
